Care Home of the Year finalist
Elm Tree Court continued to deliver exemplary care and supported staff throughout the pandemic, including opening a seven-bed Covid Isolation Area. Family and friends were constantly involved in virtual resident meetings, Throughout the pandemic Elm tree Court worked to ‘bring the outside in’ to ensure residents missed out on as few experiences as possible. Elm Tree created its own in-house: café, pub, snooker hall, cinema, sensory room, allotment, secret garden, shop and Coronation Street themed room.
Tea Room
When residents said that they missed going to the local café staff decided to create their own in-house café and Willows Tea Room was born. It was decorated in a style that was relaxing and inviting and new furniture was bought so that it resembles a traditional tearoom. The Tea Room is used daily for resident to have a natter over tea and scones and every week there is a reading group and knitting club held in there.
Pub
The Hawthorn Tavern was created so residents did not have to miss out on one of their favourite trips – a pint and a pub lunch. It has a dart board and table hockey, a fruit machine and a large screen TV with the latest sporting events shown. Their handyman built the bar himself and decorated the pub in sporting memorabilia. A local pub donated all the beers mats, menu boards and a beer pump.
Snooker Hall
The Snooker Hall was created to go alongside the pub so residents could enjoy a game of snooker or pool. The walls are filled with all the snooker legends.
Cinema
One of their favourite days out was to the dementia-friendly Cinema in Beverley where they met up with friends from other HICA homes. The Sycamore Picture Palace has been made to replicate the cinema experience with comfortable seating, a large screen, strip lighting and a wall of famous film stars.
Sensory Room
A new sensory room was created so that the home could offer the opportunity for an activity that is free from cognitive demands, allowing residents to feel relaxed and entertained. The room is a calming, stimulating, relaxing environment that is a joy to use. Alongside the home’s tovertafel table (a fully interactive light projection system) they enhanced the room with a virtual fish tank, mood lighting and sensory displays.
Allotment and Secret Garden
The allotment is an immensely popular addition to the outside areas. The idea was about creating a community enhancement project to promote good mental health and wellbeing that would bring the local community together once restrictions allow. Working an allotment is a stimulating activity for the residents and gives them purpose and a sense of achievement while also connecting them with their earlier lives.
The Secret Garden is the newest plan for the outside areas and this will be a place where staff, residents and families, will be able to go and spend time to reflect on the last year.
Shop
The new in-house shop ‘Allsorts’ sells all essential items and confectionary so their residents still have the experience of popping out to the local shop. The shop is very popular and has been a real help throughout this lockdown year.
Coronation Street
As Coronation Street is such a popular programme within the home the suggestion of a themed room was warmly agreed. It replicates the famous Street with the Rovers Return at one side with a piano and pub table and Stan and Hilda Ogden’s front room at the other complete with a fireplace and three mallard wall ducks. A large screen TV plays classic reruns of the soap throughout the day.
